Excerpt from the dj flap provides the reader with an indication of what this really interesting read is all about. Voyageurs National Park, in the starkly beautiful Minnesota-Ontario border region, is made up of vast lakes and low, rocky, forested land. It is an area of great historical and natural significance, a peaceful setting which has survived an often violent past. Designated a national park by Congress in 1971, Voyageurs was established in 1975. In this book, Robert Treuer recounts the history of the region and of the struggle to make a national park. In early chapters he describes the parkland as it looks today and turns to the distant geological past and the long period of Indian habitation. In the 1660s, Pierre Esprit Radisson and other French explorers realized that the north country was a rich source of fur-bearing animals. Treuer describes vividly the lives of the voyageurs--the men who transported furs and gave a name to the region. Intense human exploitation of the area did not begin, however, till the last half of the nineteenth century, when Canadian construction of the Dawson Trail opened the land to settlement and political control, and mining and logging became big businesses.
