"Private Joe" Fifer, Memories of War and Peace Imparted in His Ninety-Sixth Year by Joseph W. Fifer at the Request of The Chicago Tribune and Recorded by James O'Donnell Bennett, James O'Donnell Bennett, Pantagraph Printing & Stationery Co., Bloomington, Illinois, 1936, same date on front/back of CP, boards clean, light rubbing and bumping, straight, tight binding, no dust jacket, gold title and author lettering on front and along spine, 104 pages, frontispiece showing portrait of Joseph Wilson Fifer, Foreword by Frank O. Lowden, Twenty-Seventh Governor of Illinois, date by date of Fifer life beginning when he was born in 1840, several photographs of Fifer through out book including "The Young Soldier" when he enlisted in the Civil War, the front pastedown appears to have a signature of Fifer at age 96 along with a note written in pencil indicating when he passed on at age of 97, an old envelope dated Jan 23, 1938 has been glued on the front paste-down, a newspaper article dated Oct. 28, 1937 entitled "Private Joe 97 And State Pays Respects To Him" glued on second free end-paper, age tanning on opposite page from the newspaper article, text pages crisp and clean, no writing or marks, this listing also includes several other newspaper article about Fifer and a personal letter dated Nov 5, 37 from his daughter regarding how her father appreciated the birthday greetings and a reference to his visit to South Dakota, this book and additional material in very good condition
